True, steps are missing, but intro does warn that this tut is not for beginners. If changing blending modes does not give you the desired effect (due to effects), rasterize that layer by adding a new layer below the layer with the effects and merge
the 2. Now change blending mode as per tut.

There were many settings left out of this tutorial. Mostly Opacity settings after changing a layer mode. A few others but it's an almost decent walkthrough
